Your Year 12 child opened their AS mock results last Friday. The maths grade was a C. The chemistry grade was a D. UCAS applications open in eight months. You have just typed "A-Level maths tutor" into Google at 11pm, and the first result is £45 an hour, once a week, no guarantee of an A or B by summer 2026. Here is the honest 2026 guide on what an A-Level AI tutor can and cannot do, what it actually costs, and the five buying criteria that matter for a sixth-form student working toward university offers.

What is an A-Level AI tutor?

It is software that prepares a sixth-form student for A-Level exams using artificial intelligence. The AI:

  • Diagnoses what the student already knows across the full A-Level specification (not the GCSE content they finished last summer)
  • Identifies the specific subtopics where marks are being lost — for <a href="/blog/ai-tutor-a-level-maths-uk-2026">A-Level maths</a> this might be integration by parts, for <a href="/blog/ai-tutor-a-level-chemistry-uk-2026">chemistry</a> it might be organic mechanisms, for <a href="/blog/ai-tutor-a-level-biology-uk-2026">biology</a> it might be protein synthesis
  • Picks the next question based on those gaps, not on a fixed scheme of work
  • Adapts difficulty up or down in real time as the student improves or struggles
  • Remembers every wrong answer across every session, so it never wastes time on a topic the student has already mastered

What does the AI actually do day to day?

Here is what a typical week looks like for a Year 12 A-Level maths student using Grademy's AI tutor in November of Year 12, eight months before the final exams:

  4. Thursday, 45 minutes. Student sits an AQA Paper 1 mini-paper from 2023. Score: 62 out of 100. AI marks the 38 wrong answers against the AQA mark scheme, identifies 12 as careless errors (silly mistakes, not reading the question properly), 18 as genuine knowledge gaps (vectors, parametric equations, proof by contradiction), and 8 as partially correct (correct method, lost marks on presentation or final step). The 18 genuine gaps become the focus for the next two weeks.

  5. Friday, 30 minutes. Student chooses to work on vectors because the school covered vectors the previous week and they want to consolidate. AI gives 10 vector questions. Score: 7 out of 10. AI notes the 3 wrong answers were all parametric equations questions — a sub-topic not yet taught at school. AI schedules parametric equations for the half-term week.

That is 2 hours 30 minutes of focused, adaptive practice across the week. A private tutor in the same week would have seen the student once, for an hour, and covered 2 topics from a textbook.

When is an AI A-Level tutor the wrong choice?

AI tutors do not work well for every sixth-form student. Be honest about this.

  • If your child has significant gaps from GCSE. An AI A-Level tutor assumes the student has solid GCSE content. If the student did not achieve a strong grade 6 or above at GCSE in the subject, the AI will surface that gap very quickly and the student will spend the first month doing GCSE revision rather than A-Level content. The fix is six to ten hours of GCSE bridging work first, then the AI A-Level tutor. We can detect this and recommend the bridge.
  • If your child has ADHD or executive function difficulties and cannot self-direct. A-Level requires more self-direction than GCSE. An AI tutor is only useful if the student will actually open it and work. If your child cannot sustain 20 minutes of focused work, the AI cannot fix that. They need a structured study environment, a parent or tutor physically present, and possibly a school-based study skills programme first.
  • If the subject is heavily coursework-weighted. A-Level art, A-Level design technology, A-Level music performance, A-Level PE — these subjects have substantial non-examined components. AI tutors cannot help with a portfolio or a performance. Use AI for the written exam component only.
  • If your child is applying to Oxbridge or for medicine. These applications require extensive super-curricular reading, admission tests (UCAT, BMAT, MAT, PAT, LNAT, TSA) and interview preparation. AI tutors can help with the academic content of the admission tests but cannot replace the reading list or interview prep. Use the AI for A-Level content, use a specialist for the admissions process.
  • If you want someone else to take responsibility. An AI tutor cannot chase your child, cannot phone the school, cannot attend parents' evening. You still need to be the parent.

The 5 buying criteria that actually matter

When you compare AI A-Level tutors in 2026, ignore the marketing copy. Look at these five things:

1. Is the question bank mapped to the specific exam board the student is sitting?

AQA, OCR, Edexcel and CIE have meaningfully different specifications. AQA maths Paper 1 has different content weighting than OCR maths Paper 1. CIE is modular, the others are linear. An AI that says "we cover A-Level maths" without naming the exam board is not fit for purpose. Ask the provider which exam boards they cover. Ask to see the specification mapping document. If they will not show you, walk away.

2. Does it cover the exam-style mark scheme, not just the topic?

A-Level marking is heavily mark-scheme-driven. A student who writes a correct integration in a different form than the mark scheme expects will lose method marks. An AI tutor must train the student to write answers in the form the mark scheme expects. Ask to see how the AI gives feedback on a method-mark question. If the feedback only says "correct" or "incorrect", walk away.

3. Does it actually adapt, or just shuffle question order?

Adaptation means: the AI changes what it asks based on how the student answered the last question, and what it knows about the student's long-term performance. Most products only shuffle the order. To check, give the AI 5 questions the student knows and 5 they do not. A real adaptive AI will not waste time on the known 5 again. A shuffler will keep cycling them. Grademy's AI does this. 4. Is there a parent dashboard and a student-facing progress view?

The parent dashboard should show: time on task, topics covered, accuracy by topic, gap list, predicted grade trajectory, and the next recommended focus. The student-facing view should show the same data in a way that builds metacognition (the student understands what they know and what they do not). If the AI is a black box, the student cannot take ownership of their revision. Ask to see both views before you sign up.

5. Is there a free trial and is there UK data residency?

A Year 12 to Year 13 transition plan

If you are reading this in September of Year 12 and your child's AS mock results are not where they need to be, here is the 8-month plan:

October to December (Year 12). The AI diagnoses every topic in the Year 12 content. Student does 30 minutes per subject per day. Focus is on closing Year 12 content gaps before the Christmas mock exams.

January to March (Year 13, first term). The AI shifts focus to Paper 1 content, which is typically the most heavily weighted. Student does 45 minutes per subject per day. Past paper practice begins. The AI tracks which Paper 1 topics the student is weakest on and prioritises those.

April to May (Year 13, second term). The AI shifts to Paper 2 and Paper 3 content. Student does 45 minutes per subject per day. The AI introduces full timed past papers under exam conditions. Predicted grade trajectory is updated weekly.

June (Year 13, final term). The AI focuses on weak topics from the most recent past papers. Student does 60 minutes per subject per day in the final two weeks. The AI stops introducing new content and consolidates what the student knows.

Late June to early July. A-Level exams. Student sits the papers.
