AI tutor for the IB in 2026: how students should actually use one
A 2026 guide to using an AI tutor for IB — what works for HL/SL, the EE, IAs, the TOK essay, and exam blocks, and where AI quietly wastes your time.
The IB Diploma is the only programme where a single student has to sit six subjects at two different depths, write a 4,000-word Extended Essay, complete an internal assessment in every subject, and pass a Theory of Knowledge essay — all inside two years. That is not a complaint. It is the reason the IB rewards students who manage their time better than their classmates, not the ones who happen to be cleverer.
An AI tutor, used the right way, helps with the management problem more than the cleverness problem. This guide covers how IB students in 2026 should actually use one — what works for Higher Level versus Standard Level, how to handle the EE and TOK essay without cheating yourself, and where AI quietly wastes your time.
What the IB Diploma actually demands
Before talking about AI, it helps to be clear about what the IB asks of a student:
- Six subjects chosen from six subject groups, with three or four at Higher Level (HL) and the rest at Standard Level (SL)
- HL courses teach to roughly 240 teaching hours, SL to 150
- An Extended Essay of up to 4,000 words on a topic of the student's choice
- A Theory of Knowledge essay (1,600 words) and a TOK exhibition
- An Internal Assessment (IA) in every subject, marked by the teacher and moderated by the IB
- A CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) portfolio
- Final exams in May or November of Year 13
Two things make the IB harder than A-Levels or AP: the breadth of subjects at two depths, and the volume of non-exam work. AI helps most with the second one.
Where an AI tutor helps in IB
1. Drilling HL content with adaptive questions
HL subjects — usually Maths, a science, and a first language — are where grade boundaries separate a 6 from a 7. A 7 in HL Maths AA is roughly the top 5% of candidates globally. The students who get there almost always have one thing in common: they have practised more past-paper questions than their peers, with feedback on every wrong answer.

2. IAs: scaffolding without writing for the student

The mark scheme in every subject rewards a student who frames their own research question, selects and applies methodology, and reflects critically. A student who hands in an IA written by an AI gets caught — either by their own teacher, who knows their writing voice, or by the IB moderators, who see hundreds of identical essays every session.
The right way to use AI for an IA:
- Brainstorm research questions and narrow down to one that is specific enough to score well
- Stress-test your methodology against the mark scheme — ask "what would a 7 look like here, and what would a 4 look like?"
- Get feedback on a draft paragraph on a specific rubric line ("does this evaluation section address criterion C?")
- Never copy AI text into the IA. The reflection sections especially must be in your own words

3. The Extended Essay
The EE is a 4,000-word independent research paper that is graded against a generic rubric (focus, knowledge and understanding, critical thinking, presentation, engagement). Most EEs that score below a C fail for the same reason: the student picks a topic that is too broad, then writes a descriptive summary instead of an argument.
An AI tutor can help an EE student:
- Narrow a topic from "World War Two" to "The effectiveness of British naval convoy tactics in the North Atlantic, 1941–1942"
- Pressure-test the research question against the rubric — is it analytical, or descriptive?
- Suggest sources the student has not thought of (and check that they are credible)
- Read a draft paragraph and ask "where is the argument here, and where is the summary?"
The EE still has to be written by the student. The IB moderation process is real, and AI-written EEs do get flagged.
4. TOK essay
The TOK essay asks students to compare how two areas of knowledge approach a prescribed title. It is graded against a rubric that rewards clear argumentation, consideration of counterclaims, and links to the student's own experience.
The most useful thing an AI tutor does for a TOK essay is act as a Socratic sparring partner: "what is your claim in this paragraph?", "what is the strongest counter-claim?", "where is the link to a real-world situation that is not a cliché?". The student writes; the AI challenges.
Where AI wastes an IB student's time
Three traps:
Trap 1: Asking AI to summarise a textbook chapter. This is rereading with extra steps. The student reads a summary, recognises the material, and feels like they have studied. They have not. The IB exam tests production, not recognition.
Trap 2: Letting AI solve past papers. A student pastes a Paper 2 question into a chatbot, gets a model answer, copies the structure, and feels productive. They have not practised anything. The next time they sit a real paper, they cannot reproduce the steps under timed conditions. Always solve first, then use AI to mark and explain.
Trap 3: Using AI as a planning tool with no plan. "Build me an IB revision timetable" produces a generic schedule that does not match the student's actual subjects, HL/SL split, exam dates, IA deadlines, or EE supervisor meetings. The student follows it for a week, then abandons it. The right way is to build the timetable with the student's own deadlines, then ask AI to sanity-check it.
A 12-month IB plan that uses AI well
Year 12, September to March: build subject foundations. AI used for drill questions in HL subjects, weekly past-paper section in the hardest subject. IAs scoped by Christmas of Year 12.
Year 12, April to June: write first drafts of IAs. AI used for rubric pressure-testing and paragraph-level feedback, not for content generation.
Year 12, summer: EE research question finalised, supervisor meetings scheduled, source list built.
Year 13, September to December: full mocks sat under timed conditions. AI used to mark mocks against the mark scheme and identify recurring gaps.
Year 13, January to May: targeted revision on gaps identified in mocks. Final TOK essay submitted. Final IAs submitted. Past-paper drilling continues, with AI marking every wrong answer.
What to look for in an AI tutor for the IB
- Generates questions that match IB command terms ("evaluate", "to what extent", "discuss") and rubric language
- Marks answers against subject-specific mark schemes, not generic rubrics
- Has a Socratic mode that asks questions instead of giving answers (useful for TOK and EE supervision)
- Tracks what the student got wrong across sessions so revision targets real gaps
- Is honest about what it cannot do — write the IA, take the exam, replace the subject teacher
