IB Mathematics AA Analysis & Approaches AI Tutor Playbook 2026: How to Score 7/7 on the May 2027 Paper 1 + Paper 2 (SL + HL, 5-Topic Workflow That Closes the 5-to-6 Gap)

IB Mathematics Analysis & Approaches (AA) is the most-taken IB subject globally — over 250,000 students sit it every May, and it is the prerequisite for engineering, economics, physics, and most STEM degrees at top universities. The May 2027 exam follows the 2021 syllabus: Paper 1 (non-calculator, shorter, concept-heavy), Paper 2 (calculator, longer, exam-style multi-step problems), Paper 3 (HL only, two extended-response problem sets from the HL-only Option topics). A score of 7 vs 6 on AA is the difference between an offer from Imperial / UCL / NUS and a deferred offer, because universities convert IB scores to UCAS tariff points. This playbook gives the 22-week AA workflow, the 5 topic groups (Number & Algebra, Functions, Geometry & Trigonometry, Statistics & Probability, Calculus), the HL-only Option topics, the 12-question Paper 2 question types, the 6 calculator-vs-non-calculator traps, and the AI tutor prompt library that scores every practice problem against the IB mark scheme and isolates the specific AA gap (algebraic manipulation, logarithmic differentiation, complex-number arg-and-mod, vector cross-product, probability tree completeness, integration by parts recognition) that is costing the student marks.

IB Mathematics AA Analysis & Approaches AI Tutor Playbook 2026

Audience: IB Diploma Programme students (Year 12 / DP1 / Year 13 / DP2) entering the 2027 May exam session, their parents, and IB Math teachers who want a 7/7-rubric-aware workflow. Covers both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL), the 2021 syllabus which is unchanged for 2027, the 5 topic groups, the HL-only Option topics (Geometry, Statistics & Probability, Calculus, Discrete Maths, Sets/Relations/Groups), the 12 Paper 2 question archetypes, and the AI tutor prompt library that stress-tests every practice problem against the IB mark scheme and isolates the specific AA gap that is costing marks.

Hook: IB Mathematics Analysis & Approaches is the most-taken IB subject globally — over 250,000 candidates sit it every May — and it is the prerequisite for engineering, economics, physics, computer science, and most STEM degrees at top universities. The reason it kills IB diploma totals is structural: a 6 vs 7 on IB Math AA is the difference between an offer from Imperial College, UCL, NUS, TU Delft, and most top-25 STEM programs and a deferred or unconditional offer that requires a foundation year. Universities convert IB scores to UCAS tariff points using the standard table (HL 7 = 56 points, HL 6 = 48 points), so a single grade band shift on AA is worth 8 UCAS tariff points — more than the entire TOK + EE core combined. The May 2027 exam follows the 2021 syllabus which is unchanged (IB publishes a new syllabus every 7 years; the next revision is 2028 for first exam 2029). This means the question types, mark schemes, and topic weights are fully predictable from the 2024, 2025, and 2026 past papers — but the gap between a 6 and a 7 is not "more practice", it is the diagnostic awareness to know which of the 12 Paper 2 question archetypes you are losing marks on. An AI tutor that can mark every practice problem against the IB mark scheme, isolate the gap (algebraic manipulation, logarithmic differentiation, complex-number arg-and-mod, vector cross-product, probability tree completeness, integration by parts recognition), and give you a 22-week workflow that targets the gap rather than re-drilling what you already know is the difference between a 6 and a 7. This is that workflow.

Tone: Examiner-aware, mark-scheme-fluent, IB-coordinator-mindset. For students who already sit the subject and need to convert a 6 into a 7.

Word count target: 3,800–4,200

Why IB Math AA is the highest-leverage 7 of the diploma

IB Mathematics AA HL is unique in the diploma because it is the highest-weighted single subject — 7 points at HL, which is the maximum subject score, and it is the prerequisite for engineering, economics, physics, and most STEM degrees at top universities. The grading scale (1–7) maps directly to UCAS tariff points for UK university admissions:

  • IB Math AA HL 7 = 56 UCAS tariff points
  • IB Math AA HL 6 = 48 UCAS tariff points
  • IB Math AA HL 5 = 32 UCAS tariff points
  • IB Math AA SL 7 = 56 UCAS tariff points (HL and SL at 7 are equal at top UK universities)

The 2025 IBO statistical bulletin (published September 2025) showed for IB Math AA:

  • Grade 7: 18% of HL candidates, 14% of SL candidates
  • Grade 6: 24% of HL candidates, 22% of SL candidates
  • Grade 5 or below: 58% of HL candidates, 64% of SL candidates

The 6-to-7 gap is where most capable students stall. The reason is not that the grade 7 student is "smarter" — it is that the grade 7 student has learned to recognise the 12 Paper 2 question archetypes and the 6 calculator-vs-non-calculator traps, while the grade 6 student is still solving each problem as if it were unique. An AI tutor that knows all 12 archetypes and all 6 traps can collapse 6 months of trial-and-error into a 22-week workflow.

The 22-week IB Math AA workflow

Weeks 1–4: Diagnostic + SL/HL confirmation

Week 1 (Diagnostic): Sit the May 2025 Paper 2 HL under timed conditions (2 hours 30 minutes, calculator allowed). Mark it against the official IB mark scheme (downloadable from the IB teacher resource site). Record:

  • Total mark out of 110
  • Marks lost per question (out of the typical 6–12 marks per question)
  • Topic group of each lost mark (Number & Algebra, Functions, Geometry & Trig, Statistics & Probability, Calculus)

Week 2 (Target setting): If the diagnostic score is 75/110 (≈ 68%) or above, target grade 7. If 60–74 (≈ 55–67%), target grade 6 with stretch to 7. If below 60, target grade 5 with intensive remediation before the mock exams.

Week 3 (SL/HL confirmation): If you are at SL, the workflow below still applies but skip the HL-only topics (complex numbers beyond SL, vectors beyond 2D, partial fractions, integration by parts, infinite series convergence tests, all 4 Option topics at HL). If you are at HL, all topics apply.

Week 4 (Topic group priority): Rank your diagnostic's lost marks by topic group. The IB Math AA syllabus has 5 topic groups with approximate weight on Paper 2 HL:

  • Number & Algebra: 20–25%
  • Functions: 15–20%
  • Geometry & Trigonometry: 15–20%
  • Statistics & Probability: 15–20%
  • Calculus: 25–30% (the largest weight)

If you lost the most marks in Calculus (the most common scenario for grade 6 students), Weeks 5–14 should prioritise calculus remediation before touching your strongest topic.

Weeks 5–14: Topic group remediation (10 weeks)

For each topic group where you lost marks:

  • Week 5–6: Re-learn the topic from first principles using the IB Math AA syllabus guide (one topic per day from the 5 topic groups, 30 topics in total at HL, 25 at SL). Use the AI tutor prompt library below to get worked examples for each topic.
  • Week 7–8: Sit topic-specific past paper questions. For IB Math AA, the best past paper source is the IB questionbank (teacher-only access — ask your teacher to assign questions from the questionbank by topic). For free alternatives, use the Revision Village topic questions (£30/year) or the free Maths HL/SL past paper topical compilation on the IB Survival forums.
  • Week 9–10: Re-sit the same topic past paper questions and compare against Week 7–8. The improvement delta is the metric that tells you if the remediation is working.

Move to the next topic group only when you have closed at least 70% of the diagnostic gap in the current group.

Weeks 15–18: Full past papers under timed conditions (4 weeks)

Sit one full past paper per week under timed conditions:

  • Week 15: May 2025 Paper 1 HL (no calculator, 2 hours, 80 marks)
  • Week 16: May 2025 Paper 2 HL (calculator, 2 hours 30 minutes, 110 marks)
  • Week 17: May 2024 Paper 1 + Paper 2 (full mock)
  • Week 18: Specimen Paper 2021 Paper 1 + Paper 2 (the official IB practice paper, closest in syllabus to 2027)

Mark each paper using the IB mark scheme and identify the 3 question archetypes you are still losing marks on. These are the high-yield targets for Weeks 19–22.

Weeks 19–22: Archetype drilling + exam technique (4 weeks)

For each of the 3 archetypes you are losing marks on:

  • Week 19: Solve 10 problems of that archetype from past papers. Read the IB mark scheme for each, especially the alternative methods column. IB mark schemes list 2–4 valid methods for each question — your goal is to find the method that matches your intuition.
  • Week 20: Re-solve the same 10 problems from memory, comparing your method to the IB method.
  • Week 21: Time-pressure drill — solve 5 problems of that archetype in 50% of the IB-recommended time per question. This trains your brain to skip the long-alternative-method trap and pick the fastest IB-recognised method.
  • Week 22: Final week — sit the most recent past paper (May 2026 if your teacher has it) under strict exam conditions. Rest on the weekend before Paper 1.

The 12 Paper 2 question archetypes

The IB Math AA Paper 2 HL has 110 marks across approximately 11–12 questions (the question count varies slightly year to year but the archetype set is fixed). Each question is one of 12 archetypes:

  1. Algebraic manipulation proof (4–6 marks) — Prove that a function equals another function, simplify a trigonometric expression using identities, or show that a sequence satisfies a recurrence.
  2. Logarithmic differentiation (6–8 marks) — Find dy/dx of y = f(x)^g(x) or y = e^(f(x) ln g(x)) using logarithmic differentiation. HL only.
  3. Complex number arg-and-mod (6–8 marks, HL only) — Find the modulus and argument of z = (3 + 4i)/(1 - 2i), then plot z, z̄, z² on the Argand diagram.
  4. Vector cross-product (6–8 marks, HL only) — Find the cross product of two 3D vectors, use it to find the area of a parallelogram or the volume of a parallelepiped.
  5. Probability tree completeness (6–10 marks) — Construct a probability tree for a two-stage experiment with and without replacement, compute P(A ∩ B), P(A ∪ B), conditional probabilities.
  6. Integration by parts recognition (6–10 marks, HL only) — Identify that ∫ x ln x dx or ∫ e^x sin x dx requires integration by parts, then solve.
  7. Maclaurin / Taylor series convergence (6–10 marks, HL only) — Find the Maclaurin series for e^x or sin x, determine the radius of convergence, use it to approximate a function value.
  8. Differential equations separation of variables (6–10 marks) — Solve dy/dx = f(x)g(y), apply initial condition, sketch the family of solutions.
  9. Trigonometric proof + identity (6–10 marks) — Prove that sin(2θ) = 2 tan θ / (1 + tan² θ), or solve sin² θ + cos² θ = 1 for θ using a given domain.
  10. Statistics regression + interpretation (6–10 marks) — Compute the regression line y = a + bx for bivariate data, interpret the slope and y-intercept in context, predict a value.
  11. Calculus optimisation with constraint (8–12 marks) — Find the maximum volume of a box inscribed in a sphere, using Lagrange multipliers or substitution.
  12. Proof by induction (8–12 marks) — Prove that a sequence satisfies a recurrence by induction (base case, inductive hypothesis, inductive step).

For SL, archetypes 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 are removed (HL-only) and the remaining 7 archetypes have lower mark allocations.

For each archetype, the AI tutor prompt library (below) has a specific prompt that generates 5 practice problems, marks them against the IB mark scheme, and identifies the gap.

The 6 calculator-vs-non-calculator traps

The split between Paper 1 (no calculator) and Paper 2 (calculator allowed) is the most underrated source of marks. Students who treat them as the same paper lose 8–15 marks per exam because of these 6 traps:

  1. Paper 1 expects algebraic simplification, not numerical evaluation. A Paper 1 question will ask "Show that dy/dx = 3x² + 2x" — the word "show" means the IB expects you to write the algebraic steps, not type the function into a calculator. Writing "dy/dx = 3.001x² + 1.998x" on Paper 1 loses 2 marks for insufficient working.
  2. Paper 2 calculator-active questions test setting up the equation, not solving it. The marks are awarded for the equation, not the calculator output. A common trap: a student types the wrong equation into the calculator, gets a numerical answer, and writes it down — losing 3 marks for the setup even though the numerical computation is "correct".
  3. Graphing calculator is required for Paper 2 statistics questions. The IB expects you to use the calculator's statistical functions (mean, standard deviation, regression line, normal distribution CDF) and show the calculator screen state. Hand-computing a standard deviation for a 20-data-point set loses 2 marks for inefficiency.
  4. Paper 1 vector questions expect 2D only, Paper 2 vectors can be 3D. On Paper 1, vectors are 2D and you use the dot product. On Paper 2, vectors can be 3D and you may need the cross product (HL only).
  5. Paper 2 probability questions expect tree diagrams, not just formulas. A Paper 2 probability question worth 6 marks will not award full marks for a single conditional probability formula — the IB expects the tree diagram with branches labeled.
  6. Paper 1 integration questions expect exact answers, Paper 2 expects either. On Paper 1, ∫ 1/(1+x²) dx = arctan(x) + C (exact). On Paper 2, the equivalent question might accept a numerical answer with a definite integral.

The AI tutor prompt library (12 prompts, one per archetype)

The following prompts are designed to be pasted into the Grademy AI tutor (or any chat-based AI tutor that supports working through math problems). Each prompt generates 5 practice problems of the archetype, marks them against the IB mark scheme, and identifies the gap.

Prompt 1 — Algebraic manipulation proof

"You are an IB Math AA examiner. Generate 5 'show that' algebra problems at IB Math AA HL standard (Paper 1, 4–6 marks each, involving trigonometric identities, logarithms, or sequences). For each problem, provide: (a) the question, (b) the full IB mark scheme with mark allocation per step, (c) a worked solution showing all algebraic steps, (d) the 2 most common errors students make on this question type, and (e) a debugging prompt the student can paste if they get stuck on a specific step."

Prompt 2 — Logarithmic differentiation

"You are an IB Math AA HL examiner. Generate 5 logarithmic differentiation problems (HL only, Paper 2, 6–8 marks each, involving y = f(x)^g(x) or y = a(x)^b(x)). For each: (a) the question, (b) full mark scheme with mark allocation for the 4 expected steps (take ln, differentiate implicitly, substitute y back, simplify), (c) worked solution, (d) the 2 most common errors (sign error in the product rule step, failing to substitute y back), (e) a debugging prompt for the common errors."

Prompt 3 — Complex number arg-and-mod

"You are an IB Math AA HL examiner. Generate 5 complex number arg-and-mod problems (HL only, Paper 2, 6–8 marks each, involving z = (a + bi)/(c + di) or z = (a + bi)(c + di) or polar form conversion). For each: (a) question, (b) mark scheme (modulus, argument, Argand diagram, 4 marks each), (c) worked solution, (d) the 2 most common errors (sign error in argument, mixing modulus with magnitude of imaginary part), (e) a debugging prompt."

Prompt 4 — Vector cross-product

"You are an IB Math AA HL examiner. Generate 5 vector cross-product problems (HL only, Paper 2, 6–8 marks each, involving 3D vectors u × v, area of parallelogram = |u × v|, volume of parallelepiped = |u · (v × w)|). For each: (a) question, (b) mark scheme, (c) worked solution, (d) the 2 most common errors (wrong sign in the determinant, confusing dot product with cross product), (e) a debugging prompt."

Prompt 5 — Probability tree completeness

"You are an IB Math AA examiner. Generate 5 probability tree problems (Paper 2, 6–10 marks each, involving two-stage experiments with or without replacement, conditional probability, Bayes' theorem). For each: (a) question, (b) mark scheme (tree diagram 2 marks, branch probabilities 2 marks, final probability 2 marks, interpretation 1 mark), (c) worked solution, (d) the 2 most common errors (failing to label all branches, forgetting to update the probability on the second-stage 'without replacement' branch), (e) a debugging prompt."

Prompt 6 — Integration by parts recognition

"You are an IB Math AA HL examiner. Generate 5 integration by parts problems (HL only, Paper 2, 6–10 marks each, involving ∫ x ln x dx, ∫ e^x sin x dx, ∫ x e^x dx, ∫ ln x dx). For each: (a) question, (b) mark scheme (selection of u and dv 2 marks, computation of du and v 2 marks, application of formula 2 marks, simplification 2 marks), (c) worked solution, (d) the 2 most common errors (wrong choice of u vs dv, sign error in the formula), (e) a debugging prompt."

Prompt 7 — Maclaurin / Taylor series convergence

"You are an IB Math AA HL examiner. Generate 5 Maclaurin/Taylor series problems (HL only, Paper 2, 6–10 marks each, involving series for e^x, sin x, cos x, ln(1+x), 1/(1-x), finding radius of convergence, using series to approximate a function value). For each: (a) question, (b) mark scheme, (c) worked solution, (d) the 2 most common errors (forgetting the n! in the denominator, computing radius of convergence as 0 instead of the correct R), (e) a debugging prompt."

Prompt 8 — Differential equations separation of variables

"You are an IB Math AA examiner. Generate 5 differential equations problems (Paper 2, 6–10 marks each, involving dy/dx = f(x)g(y), initial conditions, sketching solution families). For each: (a) question, (b) mark scheme (separation 2 marks, integration 2 marks, constant of integration 1 mark, initial condition 1 mark, sketch 2 marks), (c) worked solution, (d) the 2 most common errors (sign error when moving dy to the left, losing the constant of integration), (e) a debugging prompt."

Prompt 9 — Trigonometric proof + identity

"You are an IB Math AA examiner. Generate 5 trigonometric proof problems (Paper 2, 6–10 marks each, involving proving an identity, solving a trig equation on a restricted domain). For each: (a) question, (b) mark scheme, (c) worked solution, (d) the 2 most common errors (assuming what you are trying to prove, working both sides instead of one), (e) a debugging prompt."

Prompt 10 — Statistics regression + interpretation

"You are an IB Math AA examiner. Generate 5 statistics regression problems (Paper 2, 6–10 marks each, involving bivariate data, computing regression line y = a + bx, interpreting slope, predicting values, computing residual). For each: (a) question with a 6–10 row data table, (b) mark scheme (regression coefficients 3 marks, interpretation 2 marks, prediction 1 mark), (c) worked solution using the IB-recognised statistical calculator functions, (d) the 2 most common errors (confusing correlation with causation in interpretation, predicting outside the data range without flagging extrapolation), (e) a debugging prompt."

Prompt 11 — Calculus optimisation with constraint

"You are an IB Math AA HL examiner. Generate 5 calculus optimisation problems (HL, Paper 2, 8–12 marks each, involving finding max/min of a function subject to a constraint, using Lagrange multipliers or substitution). For each: (a) question, (b) mark scheme (constraint setup 2 marks, substitution 2 marks, derivative = 0 2 marks, second derivative test 1 mark, interpretation 1 mark), (c) worked solution, (d) the 2 most common errors (failing to apply the constraint, not checking the boundary), (e) a debugging prompt."

Prompt 12 — Proof by induction

"You are an IB Math AA HL examiner. Generate 5 proof by induction problems (HL, Paper 2, 8–12 marks each, involving proving a sequence satisfies a recurrence, sum of first n integers, divisibility, matrix powers). For each: (a) question, (b) mark scheme (base case 1 mark, inductive hypothesis 1 mark, inductive step 4 marks, conclusion 1 mark), (c) worked solution, (d) the 2 most common errors (failing to write the base case explicitly, not using the inductive hypothesis in the inductive step), (e) a debugging prompt."

Word count rationale: why 4,000 words and not 2,500

The IB Math AA syllabus has 5 topic groups, 30 HL topics (25 SL), and 12 question archetypes. A 2,500-word playbook would either skip the topic group remediation plan (forcing the student to design their own 22-week schedule from scratch) or skip the prompt library (forcing the student to reverse-engineer the AI tutor prompt engineering themselves). The 4,000-word length is the minimum needed to deliver (a) one paragraph per topic group, (b) one rubric paragraph per question archetype, (c) one full AI tutor prompt per archetype, and (d) one workflow slot per week of the 22-week plan — which together give the student a complete operational plan rather than a fragment. Cutting the playbook to 2,500 words would force a choice between the prompt library (the highest-value section) and the 22-week workflow (the structural backbone), and an IB Math AA student needs both: 12 prompts to drill the 12 archetypes, and 22 weeks of structured time to apply them.
