  • Histogram trap. Histograms use frequency density (frequency ÷ class width), not raw frequency. Many students lose 2 marks because they plotted raw frequency.
  • Cumulative frequency trap. The median is read at n/2, not at the middle x-value. A 0580-aware tutor marks the read-at-n/2 step as its own line.

Topic 5 — Functions (Extended only)

Functions are a separate topic group in Extended. They cover domain, range, composite functions (fg(x)), inverse functions (f⁻¹(x)), and the relationship between a function and its graph. Functions are weighted roughly 10% of Paper 4 marks but are concentrated in 2–3 high-mark questions.

Examiner traps in functions:

  • Composite function trap. fg(x) means f(g(x)), not g(f(x)). The order matters. Most students compute them in the wrong order and lose 2 marks.
  • Inverse function trap. Swap x and y, then solve for y. The 0580 mark scheme marks the swap as its own line and the solve as its own line.
  • Function graph trap. The graph of y = f(x) and y = f⁻¹(x) are reflections across y = x. Most students draw the reflection backwards.

The 6 Command Words Cambridge Marks Hardest

The 0580 mark scheme gives command words specific mark allocations. Two of the most-mismarked tutor behaviours are:

Command Word 1 — "Show that"

  • Extended (Papers 2 + 4) caps at A* but covers more content. The grade boundaries are tighter. A* is roughly 75% on Paper 4 in 2026.

Most international schools sit Extended because parents want A*–C. The trade-off is: Extended students who plateau at a strong C get a C; Core students who would have plateaued at a strong C also get a C, but with less content coverage.
