Five things change between primary and secondary that are not obvious from the outside:

  1. The number of teachers. A primary teacher has known your child for two years. A secondary teacher has known them for six days. A child who has to count up to 9 × 7 loses two minutes per question on a 30-question paper. That is an hour of exam time lost over a year. What the AI should not be used for over the summer:

  • Pre-teaching KS3 content. The teachers will teach it. If the child has seen it before, they switch off in the lesson because it is boring. If the child is confused by something they were "taught" over the summer, they do not ask in class because they think they should already know it.
  • Replacing the school's own bridging programme. Most UK secondary schools run a 4–6 week bridging programme over the summer — reading lists, maths booklets, a tutor-group meet-up, an open-evening in July. The AI tutor is the parent's addition to that, not a replacement for it.

The first piece of maths homework is set in week one. The child does not understand it. The child does not know how to ask the teacher. The parent asks if everything is okay. The child says yes. The gap opens in week two and by half-term the child is six lessons behind.
