If you are a UK parent of a child with ADHD, dyslexia, autism, or another special educational need, you have probably typed "AI tutor for ADHD child" or "dyslexia reading AI tutor" into Google this week. You have also probably landed on ten identical listicles that all recommend the same five apps none of which actually work for your kid. This guide is different. It is written by a team that has built and shipped an AI tutor, and it tells you what AI tutoring genuinely does for neurodivergent learners — and what it does not.

By the end of this guide you will know:

What an AI tutor actually does differently for SEN kids

Neurodivergent learners are not a single group. They share one thing: the standard school environment was not designed for them. AI tutoring helps with specific failure modes that show up across ADHD, dyslexia, autism, and DYS-CALC profiles — but only if it is built with the right design constraints. The four that matter:

  1. Chunked delivery with no time pressure. A child with ADHD or dyslexia can lose the thread of a 20-minute worked-example. AI tutors should default to 2-4 minute chunks, with optional "slow down" controls surfaced in the chat. If the platform forces a 15-minute video, walk away.
  2. Multi-modal input. Reading a question is the bottleneck for dyslexia. Writing an answer is the bottleneck for dyspraxia. AI tutors that accept voice input, photos of handwriting, and text all the way through the session remove the stuck-on-input failure mode.
  3. Persistent working memory. Children with ADHD forget what they did last week. The AI tutor should remember. If you log in after a half-term and the tutor asks "where did we get to last time?", that is a feature. Most do not.
  4. No punishment for breaks. Kids with ADHD take tangents. The AI tutor should not penalise off-topic questions or back-button behaviour. If the session ends the moment the child looks away, that is a deal-breaker.

The four that make AI tutoring worse for SEN kids:

  1. Leaderboards and streaks. Gamification is hostile to children who already struggle with rejection-sensitive dysphoria. A streak of 14 days is fine. A streak of 0 days after a half-term off is a crisis.
  2. Strict reading-age filtering. If the AI tutor refuses to display reading material above Year 5 reading age, your Year 9 child with dyslexia will be sent back to primary content. The age filter should be off; the readability filter should be settable per child.
  3. Single output format. Most AI tutors print a paragraph. Dyslexic learners need bullet points, mind maps, or audio. If the platform only outputs text, you have a 1990s chatbot, not a tutor.
  4. Time-on-task KPIs. Platforms that report "30 minutes practice" to parents as a positive metric are misaligned with SEN. Kids with ADHD often do 8 minutes of high-intensity work and 22 minutes of staring. The platform should measure outcomes, not minutes.

The four SEN profiles and what AI tutoring does for each

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)

The bottleneck for ADHD learners is sustained attention, not comprehension. The same child who can hold a 40-minute conversation about Minecraft cannot hold a 4-minute conversation about long division. AI tutoring works for ADHD when it does three things:

  • Defaults to 2-4 minute chunks with quick "right answer" feedback
  • Lets the child switch topics inside a session without losing the thread
  • Does not punish tangents — if the child asks "what is the biggest volcano in the world?", the tutor answers and then returns to the maths

What AI tutoring does not do for ADHD: it does not replace the executive-function scaffold a parent or teacher provides. The AI tutor is a tool, not a substitute. If your child is struggling with the act of starting, they need an external cue (parent, timer, visual schedule) before they open the AI tutor.

Dyslexia

The bottleneck for dyslexia is decoding text at speed. UK schools screen for dyslexia in Year 2 or Year 3; most children with dyslexia are identified by Year 5. AI tutoring works for dyslexia when it does three things:

  • Accepts voice input for every answer (not just some)
  • Reads the question aloud automatically (and the answer after the child writes it)
  • Uses a dyslexia-friendly font (OpenDyslexic, Lexie Readable, or Atkinson Hyperlegible) and lets the parent toggle this

What AI tutoring does not do for dyslexia: it does not teach phonics from first principles. If your child is below reading age 9, an AI tutor is the wrong tool. Use a structured phonics programme (Lexon, Toe-by-Toe, or Nessy) for the first 6 months and then introduce an AI tutor for content subjects.

Autism Spectrum (ASC)

The bottleneck for autistic learners is unpredictability. AI tutoring works for autism when it does three things:

  • Has a clear, predictable user interface with the same icons in the same positions every session
  • Does not force eye contact, video presence, or social role-play
  • Lets the child set the pace — if the child wants to do 30 questions in one sitting, the AI tutor does not stop them

What AI tutoring does not do for autism: it does not replace the social-skills work that some autistic learners need. An AI tutor is a tool for academic content, not a substitute for social communication interventions.

Dyscalculia

The bottleneck for dyscalculia is number-sense. AI tutoring works for dyscalculia when it does three things:

  • Uses concrete-representational-abstract progression (blocks → drawings → symbols) rather than jumping straight to symbols
  • Lets the child use fingers, counters, or a number line on screen
  • Does not time pressure arithmetic — if the child needs 8 seconds to compute 7 + 5, give them 8 seconds

What AI tutoring does not do for dyscalculia: it does not replace explicit instruction in number sense. If your child is still struggling with place value in Year 5, an AI tutor is the wrong tool. Use a structured intervention programme (Numicon, 1stClass@Number) for the first 6 months and then introduce an AI tutor for application.

EHCP and SEND funding: how to claim in 2026

In England, parents of children with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or a child identified as SEN Support can claim AI tutor subscriptions in three ways:

  1. SEN Notional Budget. Mainstream schools receive £6,000 per EHCP-equivalent pupil in notional SEN funding. Most schools will not actively advertise that this covers an AI tutor subscription, but they have the budget for it. Ask the SENCO in writing.
  2. Element 3 Top-Up Funding. For higher-needs EHCPs, the local authority pays the school an additional £6,000 to £20,000 per year. Some LAs explicitly list "digital learning tools" as eligible spend.
  3. Personal Budget (Section F). The EHCP can name a specific tool, including an AI tutor, and the LA pays the parent directly via a personal budget or direct payment. This is the most reliable pathway but requires the EHCP to be in place first.

In Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, the devolved SEND equivalents (Co-ordinated Support Plan, Additional Learning Needs, SEN Code of Practice) have the same principle but different paperwork. The Welsh ALN system is the most straightforward — parents can self-refer for an AI tutor as "auxiliary aid" under the ALN Code 2021.

In the Republic of Ireland, the SENO (Special Educational Needs Organiser) can approve an AI tutor subscription as part of a SET (Special Education Teaching) plan. The reimbursement cycle is 8-12 weeks.

The 6-week pilot plan

Do not commit to a full year subscription until you have run a 6-week pilot. Here is the plan:

Week 1 — Baseline. Do the AI tutor diagnostic. Note the starting grade estimate. Note your child's reaction. Do not push if the child is resistant.

Week 2 — Calibration. Adjust the readability, chunk size, and font. Let your child pick the AI tutor's voice if the platform offers it. Use a parent dashboard to track time-on-task vs. completion.

Week 3 — Subject focus. Pick one subject where the child is struggling. Run the AI tutor for 15 minutes per day, 5 days per week. Note the topics the child asks for help on (the AI tutor's analytics should surface this).

Week 4 — Independence test. Tell your child to use the AI tutor without you in the room. Watch from the kitchen. If your child can stay on task for 10 minutes without prompting, the AI tutor is working.

Week 5 — Cross-subject. Now pick a second subject. Run the AI tutor for 15 minutes per day on topic 1, 10 minutes on topic 2. Compare outcomes.

Week 6 — Decision. At the end of week 6, you have three data points: time-on-task, completion rate, and one of (1) a grade improvement on a school test, (2) a parent-observed confidence improvement, (3) a teacher-observed engagement improvement. If any of the three is positive, the AI tutor is worth the subscription. If none are positive, switch tools.

What to look for in a SEND-friendly AI tutor

The minimum feature set for a SEND-friendly AI tutor in 2026:

  • Voice input AND output for every question
  • OpenDyslexic / Lexie Readable font toggle
  • Configurable chunk size (2 / 4 / 8 minutes)
  • No leaderboards or streak notifications
  • Parent dashboard with time-on-task + completion-rate
  • UK GDPR / DPA 2018 compliant data processing — child data should not leave the UK
  • UK-based or EU-based customer support (email is fine; phone is better)
  • A free trial of at least 14 days, no credit card required

If a platform does not offer a 14-day free trial, that is a red flag. You should not be paying for a tool you have not tested with your child.

What it costs

As of 2026, the realistic UK price range for an AI tutor with the SEN features above is £8 to £40 per month. The free-tier options (Khan Academy, BBC Bitesize, Oak National Academy) are useful for content but do not offer the personalisation or persistent memory that SEN learners need. The premium tier (£20-£40/month) is where the personalisation is. The middle tier (£10-£20/month) is where most families will land.

If your child is on EHCP, ask the LA to fund the subscription before you pay out of pocket. If they refuse, ask again in writing — most LAs will fund a 6-month pilot and then review.

The bottom line

AI tutoring genuinely helps neurodivergent learners — but only if the platform is designed for them. Most general-purpose AI tutoring platforms were designed for neurotypical learners and then retrofitted with "accessibility features". The result is a platform that does not work for ADHD because it still has leaderboards, does not work for dyslexia because it still streams text, and does not work for autism because it still has unpredictable UI changes.
