The slide is real, and it is unequal

Cooper's 1996 meta-analysis put the average summer loss at roughly 1 month of math and 2 months of reading for elementary students. A 2021 RAND update confirmed the picture is worse than most parents realize:

  • Low-income students lose 2–3× more during summer than affluent peers.
  • By grade 6, that gap compounds into 18+ months of unfinished learning.
  • 9th-grade algebra readiness — the strongest predictor of high-school graduation — drops 22% for every summer without structured practice.

You have seen it. You grade the September diagnostic. Half the class forgot how to factor, what mitosis means, or where to put the comma.

You also know the answer is not "more worksheets." It is not a stack of summer packets the kids will lose. It is not a 90-minute Zoom tutoring block every Tuesday in July.

It is structured, low-friction, spaced retrieval — delivered to the kids' phones, with the teacher holding the steering wheel.

This guide is what works, what does not, and the free 8-week plan we built for K–12 teachers running a summer program this year.


What does NOT work

Before the playbook, the receipts. Five things schools waste money on every summer:

1. The big summer packet

A 40-page PDF mailed home in May. Result: 80% never open it. Of the 20% who do, most cram it in the last week of August — exactly the wrong pacing.

2. Mandatory weekly Zoom tutoring

Ages 8–14 will not voluntarily log in. Even with parental pressure, attendance past week 3 collapses to single digits. Teachers burn out re-teaching September material that was supposedly "covered" all summer.

3. Assigned reading without accountability

"Read 20 minutes a day" — without retrieval practice — produces almost no retention gains. Decoding practice ≠ comprehension gains ≠ vocabulary growth.

4. Generic "summer learning apps"

Khan Academy, IXL, ABCmouse. Useful, but students plateau in 2 weeks when the novelty fades. They reward streaks, not mastery. You cannot see which student did which problem.

5. Sending kids home with a textbook chapter list

Self-explanatory. Dead on arrival.


What DOES work (the research)

Three interventions have peer-reviewed evidence of reducing summer slide by 30–70%:

1. Spaced retrieval practice

The same SM-2 / spaced repetition algorithm used in medical education. Students see a question, attempt it, and the system schedules the next review based on how confidently they answered.

  • Ebbinghaus forgetting curve: reviewing at expanding intervals (1 day, 3 days, 7 days, 21 days) moves retention from ~25% to ~80%.
  • The free Anki algorithm in your pocket, but with a friendly K–12 wrapper.

2. Reading with daily comprehension checks

Not silent reading. Reading followed by 3 retrieval questions — auto-graded, with the answer revealed before the next session. Kids retain 2–3× more.

3. Parent-facing 5-minute weekly digest

What the child practiced this week. What they got wrong. What to ask at dinner. Zero teacher prep time. Parent engagement goes from 5% to 65%.

The synthesis: combine all three. Run them in parallel. Automate the boring parts. Spend the saved teacher time on the kids who are actually behind.


The 8-week K–12 summer plan (free, copy-paste)

We built this for K–12 teachers running summer programs, summer school teachers, and parents who want a structure.

Week 0 — Set up (last week of school, 30 minutes)

  • Pick the 8 most-missed standards from your spring data.
  • For math: 16 questions per standard (128 total). For ELA: 8 short passages × 3 questions each (24 total).

The "review" is the spaced-repetition algorithm surfacing the items the student forgot.

Parent letter (paste, customize, send)

Subject: [Teacher name]'s summer plan for [Student name]

Hi [Parent name],

Your child will get 10 minutes of math and 10 minutes of reading practice a day, four days a week, plus one longer review on Sunday. The app schedules itself — no planning needed from you. Every Friday I'll send a 1-page summary of what your child practiced and got wrong. If you want to help, ask them to teach you one of the questions they got right.

The first session takes about 5 minutes to set up.

The "ask them to teach you one question they got right" line is the most important sentence. Self-explanation is the single most effective retrieval strategy in the literature (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006).


What the teacher does once a week (15 minutes)

  • Open the dashboard. Look at the red list (students who did not log in last week).
  • Send the red-list students a personal text. ("Hey [name], I noticed you missed last week — want to talk about what's blocking you?")
  • Skim the Friday digest before you send it to parents. (Grademy generates it. You approve.)
  • Pick one struggling student for a 15-minute 1:1 phone call.

That is the whole teacher job. The platform handles spacing, grading, scheduling, parent communication, and the September diagnostic.


What about the kids with no phone / no internet?

Three workarounds, in order of effort:

  1. School-issued hotspot + tablet. ~$200 per student for the summer. CARES/ESSER funds cover it in many districts.
  2. Library + paper deck. Print the 16 math questions per standard × 8 standards = 128 math problems for the whole summer. Send home with the parent letter. (Lower retention, but non-zero.)
  3. Community partner. Boys & Girls Club, YMCA, public library. Most run free structured programs already. Partner with them — let them use your deck.
