Why traditional credit recovery fails

2. Adaptive practice, not fixed curriculum

The AI should be able to slow down, speed up, or skip content based on what each kid needs. A fixed curriculum that all 60 kids go through (even in different orders) is the same problem as the textbook.

3. Refuses to give answers

This is critical. A credit recovery student who can get the answer from the AI is not recovering credit — they're cheating their way through. The AI must ask questions, give hints, and walk through the process. If it gives answers, walk away.

  2. "What's your pass rate in continuation high school or summer school programs?" If they don't have data, they're guessing.
  3. "How do you handle prerequisite gaps?" If they say "we cover prerequisites in the curriculum," they're not diagnosing. Walk away.
  4. "What does the teacher see?" If the answer is "a gradebook," it's not enough. The teacher needs sub-skill data.
  5. "Can a student pass by gaming the AI?" If they hesitate, the answer is yes.

A vendor who can answer all 5 in writing is worth piloting. A vendor who can't isn't.


A 6-week credit recovery pilot plan
